After slowly ambling our way through the market, and devouring delicious Pain au Chocolat, we boarded Richards Yacht to sail the River Jaudy. Having sailed this remarkably old vessel all the way across the Atlantic Ocean from America, Richard is an avid sailor always eager to take his baby out on the water. Lucky for us, as this meant we got to take it for a spin with him! We enjoyed a pleasant afternoon eating our goodies from the market, drinking French wine, while watching the tranquil countryside pass by as we putted along the river. Many beautiful stone manor houses, and pretty French cottages sit along the waterfront amongst verdant fields and grazing animals. We really can’t think of a better way to spend a relaxing afternoon.
Brittany is famous for a regional specialty of French Crêpes called Galettes; a thin pancake made out of buckwheat, served sweet or savoury. After seeing plenty of cafés advertising this local delicacy we couldn’t resist the temptation to pop in for quick bite to eat at a cosy traditional restaurant where Treeny sampled her first ever sausage and egg galette. It was delicious!
As France’s most popular tourist attraction outside of Paris, Mont Saint-Michel in the summer is a madhouse, with holidaymakers filling every lane, corner, seat and much to our dismay all of our photos. Meandering through the lanes with the crowds created a Disneyland-like atmosphere, and when Kathy proclaimed the village looked right out of the pages of “Puddle Lane”, we couldn't help but feel like we were on a movie set with the postcard perfect half-timbered buildings tightly pack in on top of one another, the dramatic ramparts and bastions of the walls and of course the castle-like abbey hanging over our heads. The strange location on an island, that is not quite an island unless the tide goes up, gives Mont Saint-Michel a bizarre otherworld quality, with miles and miles of dark, gloomy sand surrounding it. Apparently if the tide is at it's lowest point, and you subtracted a further 12m off the water level, you would be able to walk to Jersey!
Next stop, we hit Turkey for some exotic Middle Eastern culture in Istanbul...
